Learn All About Mentoring with New Pathways for Youth
What a 15-year-old taught me about resilience and transformation
When I became a mentor at New Pathways for Youth, I knew I wanted to make a difference, but I never imagined how much it would change my own life. My mentee, was 15 when we first met. She had big dreams of becoming a teacher but was struggling with school and facing adversity at home. Through New Pathways’ Level Up program, we started a journey that would transform us both.
The Level Up experience is more than just setting goals—it’s about fostering self-worth, resilience, and hope. During those intense three-and-a-half days, I saw my mentee go from feeling unsure of herself to standing tall with confidence. With New Pathways’ support, she was learning to navigate the challenges of extreme poverty and adversity with newfound strength.
One of the most memorable moments was when my mentee told me how she used the life skills training from our Power Up sessions to handle a difficult situation at home. That moment showed me how the program’s combination of social-emotional development and personal growth really makes a difference. It wasn’t just about her learning new skills; it was about her realizing she has the power to change her circumstances.
New Pathways for Youth’s support system is incredible. They provide ongoing training and guidance, ensuring we, as mentors, can be effective in supporting our mentees through the ups and downs. With the 1-on-1 mentoring, they equip these young people with social-emotional, personal development, and life skills training that allows them to thrive despite the challenges they face.
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a mentor, now is the time. The next Level Up matching event is in November, and you could help transform the life of a young person like my mentee—and your own in the process. Sign up today!
